Shell folded footings using different angles and EPS cavity filling: experimental study

Abstract Shell folded footings have drawn the interest of researchers for decades as an alternative to typical flat isolated because can reduce needed amount reinforced concrete in addition enhancing overall geotechnical performance supporting soil medium. The main setback utilizing such is relatively complex geometry bottom cavity, which requires proper compaction used fill that cavity. Current geosynthetic materials geofoam or expanded polystyrene (EPS) proved efficiency many applications, where EPS was adopted herein a cavity-filling material footings. and footing properties were determined using ultrasonic test device, modulus elasticity damping coefficient. aim this study experimentally assess behavior with without filling seven fully instrumented models folding angles ranging from 0° 45°. Reinforcement placed limited along perimeter act hidden ring beam. load tested inside sandbox measure internal stresses induced settlement. Results showed significant enhancement after EPS. Modification factors developed standard bearing capacity settlement equations account angle effects.
